Student stories: experiences that inspire

 WINESIONARIES 2017-2019

Aytac Yariktas

"I see wine as a cultural object. The beverage offers us an opportunity of a better comprehension about social constructions circulating around itself. In a glass, it is possible to find answers about how the daily habits, traditions, perceptions, celebrations, heritage, history and anthropology are expressed.
This is I believe how our program has been designed. WINTOUR has allowed us to take a journey across cultures. Whlist following the pathways of wine, I can see the reflections of cultural assets shaping an individual's attitudes and behaviours. This point was my main motivation to apply our interculturally diverse programme.
I am sharing the opinion that Food & Wine is one of the voyages to the world of yet undiscovered."

"I had been looking for a wine master program for a while, but none of the options seemed a good fit. And then one day I found Wintour, with its great combination of technical knowledge, market-wise perspective and practical approach. It was a match!

Almost a year after, it has proved to be the right choice: I am enjoying life in some of the most relevant wine countries, learning from savvy teachers, and experiencing first-hand what is seen in class. Wintour is providing me with an in-depth vision of the industry challenges in an enriching multicultural context, and my only regret is that I am almost already half-way of this adventure."

Carolina Abreu

"I have always been a lover of the most diverse forms of art and during my Viticulture and Enology course I felt in love with this one: It blends hard work and wisdom of all the ones involved, beginning with the grape growers. The personal perceptions during the elaboration process from the enologist, the one managing wine's endless complexity, recognizing aging potential, or the art of blending to keep the high quality level. Not less important, all moments and memories though this path are worth enough.
Currently, sharing this passion with people from around the world according to different backgrounds and experiences, is giving me the most complementary vision, broadening my mind more and more, increasing my personal and professional skills, in a way I could never have imagined. Learning in about the most prestigious wine producers regions and methods is so much more effective than theoretical learning. We just finished the first semester, and I already know what I want to do for a living: providing unforgettable experiences and presenting this universe to those who want to know it."

"Robert Louis Stevenson said "Wine is bottled poetry", Dali said "It requires a mad man to grow the vine, a wise man to watch over it, a lucid poet to make it, and a lover to drink it" Pablo Neruda wrote an Ode to it, and we agree! Because it is nature, science, technology, craftsmanship, tradition, heritage, history, geography, gastronomy, pleasure, culture and art all together, that make wine so fascinating. Already in the second semester, I know WINTOUR is providing me with all I need to make sure that my oenophilia gets absolutely contagious in the future. Because this is my plan, to communicate the beautiful world of wine, to share the passion, to create more wine lovers!"

"I always remember making plans for my next trip while enjoying a glass of wine, and while still being on my current trip. Wine tourism was my favorite pastime until the moment I found out about WINTOUR, and then, it became much more. It is turning from a hobby into a beautiful, future career.
I knew this master would be the right place to be; however, my experience so far has been beyond my expectations. The high standard of education, dynamic international learning environment, and interaction with people from different background is exactly what I am experiencing now. We are visiting amazing wineries, tasting some beautiful wines, and building a community of highly-trained professionals within the wine tourism field.
Wine... To some it is simply a drink that has brought people together for centuries. However, for #wintour students it means something more. It's our passion."

Juan Cabanzón

"When I started my previous studies in gastronomic sciences, I realized that the key place, where the magic happens, is not in the bottle of wine. The 'miracle' started long ago, when the harvester picked up carefully every bunch of grapes... Having the opportunity to travel around three of the most well reputed wine countries, knowing the terroir of every region, and even more important, meeting who's behind the final product; has been the decisive argument for me to take part of this amazing program.
As the course has gone forward, I have understood that this approach to the source through the wine tourism can be a key player when trying to connect new generations to the outstanding world of wine. My goal? To get people closer to it, showing real and passionate stories.
But I am not alone on it, I must mention the amazing family of 25 members we have formed after some months. A melting pot of cultures that enriches even more every class."

"A wine-tourism crossover master? Who came up with this brilliant program? I love wine, I love to travel. There is no reason why I should not apply for it. Here I am, Wintour 2.0! I have been asked many times, "Are you really studying?" Although it seems that we keep drinking and traveling, we actually have been profiting from the hands-on experiences. The program offers many opportunities to taste wines, visit cellars and heritage sites, learn from professors and scholars, and meet with professionals from tourism and wine industries.

This journey would not be amazing without 25 passionate winesionaries studying together. By sharing our cultures and differences with each other, we learn beyond academic and technical knowledge. You could not imagine the chemistry among us. Perhaps wine does the magic and brings out the best in us.

I had a fruitful semester in Tarragona, Spain. Now I am continuing my journey in Bordeaux, France. Meanwhile, I look forward to my next adventure in Porto, Portugal and also my internship and future career somewhere in the world. WINTOUR not only opens many doors for me, but also helps me to embrace the world of wine."

"Why WINTOUR?... for me, there is no reason why not. To marry your passion and skills into one profession, this is a life long aim for most people, and sometimes they never get there. I know I am achieving this aim through WINTOUR. It was the ideal next-step to reorient my career from international hotel marketing towards my passion for wine and my entrepreneurial goals in wine tourism. No other masters program provides this level of hands-on, experiential learning specifically attuned to the field of wine tourism, all within the context of steeping yourself in the local cultures of three of the world's most fascinating wine capitals. Most importantly, I have already fostered what I know will be life-long connections with other passionate and talented students and professionals who matriculate from all over the world. This is priceless...this is WINTOUR."

"Why WINTOUR?
It is one of the most rewarding Master's Programmes I have come across. I have increased my knowledge not only on wine, but also on the languages, cultures and history of Spain, France and Portugal.
I get to share this wonderful two year experience with 24 other wine lovers from 19 different countries so not only am I learning of the wines of the world, but also for the people of the world. Being from a small town in South Africa, known as Upington, I could never have imagined pursuing such a unique Master, it has all only been possible, because of WINTOUR.
In a few months I have gone from being just a wine lover with very little knowledge to someone who appreciates, understands and is educated on the processes of wine. Furthermore I believe that no other beverage has ever or will ever be as intriguing as wine, therefore I will always be learning.
As Luis Fernando Olaverri once said "Wine is the only artwork you can drink"
So if you are a wine lover seeking a life changing experience, be Winesionary, be WINTOUR"

"Wine world is magical place and being there is privilege for me. I wanted to become part of wine family that unites every wine enthusiast around the world. I was inspired by Georgian winemakers who followed their passion and were happy with it. I started searching programs to fulfill my dream. And this is how I found WINTOUR. What I like in this program is that I can make decisions about my internships independently. WINTOUR is possibility to work with best wineries and wine makers, visit famous wine destinations and get involved in world wine tourism. I highly recommend WINTOUR to everyone who is searching a way to fulfill their knowledge in wine and tourism."

Fernanda Díez de Borbón

"Arts are creations made to express a vision about the world! Frank Lloyd Wright said: "Art is a discovery and development of elementary principles of nature into forms suitable for human use". I see wine as the resource through which the winemaker expresses his culture, ideas, values; and the customers interpret all this when they drink the wine. In the moment a person sees the colour, smells the aromas and taste the wine, an instant and invisible connection between the drinker and the winemaker is created. That person will be transported into a small vineyard in Priorat, a prestigious Château in Bordeaux or a modern cellar in the US, forgetting about the present. Picasso said "The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls" and I think that is exactly what happens when someone drinks wine. It doesn't matter if you are in a meeting with friends or in a professional tasting, you forget about the world for a while and just enjoy. I chose this master because I think wine tourism helps people to understand better what winemakers want to express through their products and allows them to experience and give more value to this magic world of wine."
