Universidade do Porto was officially established on 22 March 1911, shortly after the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic. Its historical roots date back to the 18th century when a combination of training experiences would be transformed into a university.

With more than 34,000 registered students, 3,600 Lecturers and Researchers, 1,700 Technicians and Administrative Staff, U.Porto combines high quality education focused on individual vocations and talents as well as market needs, ranking number one in terms of Scientific production in Portugal. Currently, the U.Porto is the most international University of Portugal, thanks to its active cooperation with hundreds of higher education. In recent years, U.Porto has consolidated its position in leading world rankings, generally ranking among the top 100 European universities and among the top 350 universities in the world. It also stands out in these rankings among the Portuguese higher education institutions with the highest standards and reputation.
